Artist statement
My work includes paintings, mixed media, and prints that examine emotional states, societal roles, solitude, and the power they have in shaping one's perception of reality. The general imagery in my artwork has an eerie, unsettling quality, often featuring quiet scenes containing naturalistic figures, usually alone or accompanied by versions of themselves in distorted environments. An exception is the “Lil Guys,” simplified stand-ins for broader metaphors about the human experience. When painting, I work intuitively, contrasting acrylic paint’s opacity with watercolor and colored pencils’ translucency to create a sense of visual anxiety between the figure and their environment. Color palettes combine intense complements with neutrals, expressing tension between the subconscious and reality. My prints, particularly the etchings and lithographs, use texture and linework rather than complex color palettes to evoke an eerie atmosphere and convey the psychological turbulence of the subjects. I use settings from natural and constructed environments to stage my compositions, such as rooms, houses, and landscapes. By including varied textures and styles across both mediums, I reinforce an unreliable perspective and add intensity. Recently, in my mixed-media work, I have moved further into abstraction, breaking down environments into fundamental shapes and lines.
Conceptually, I am fascinated by creating art that holds viewers in a moment of discomfort, encouraging introspection, self-analysis, and moments of connection with others. I believe personal growth can occur when individuals reflect on their feelings of distress and consider their reactions to artworks that challenge their comfort level. This obsession is evident in all my pieces and is the unifying idea behind my work.
